Inspired by the counterintuitive viewpoints from everyday life and social media, often excused as #unpopularopinion, the exhibition inhabits the tension between private intimacies, mainstream realities, and intense subjectivities. What if we gave #unpopularopinion a physical form? Could a half-finished, half-open space reveal the artists’ semi-private musings, just for a moment?
Four artists, two pairs, two rounds. unpopularopnion brings together Tung Wing Hong, Sami Yip Chun Sang, Aaron Lam Kwok Yam, and Cathleen Ching Yee Lau, in an exhibition artist-curated and organised by Kaio Wu Hiu Nam. The exhibition space is divided into semi-open enclosures by temporary structures. Two rooms are built to be dismantled, making way for the next pair of works. The process repeats itself, until, in the end, nothing remains.
Aaron Lam Kwok Yam and Cathleen Ching Yee Lau trace personal links to material and familial memory. Tung Wing Hong and Sami Yip Chun Sang probe the emotional contradictions of desire and resistance. Unpopularopinion foregrounds personal explorations and expressions. Each artist occupies their own ‘room,’ disconnected, yet seemingly entangled, inviting viewers to piece together the incomplete from the artists’ clues.
